What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of porcelain ceramic, a material that resembles natural tooth enamel. They’re custom made by our dentists to fit over the front of your teeth and correct aesthetic issues with your smile. A non-surgical procedure, porcelain veneers at Sydney Dental Surgeons can usually be completed in 1 to 3 visits.

Once seamlessly bonded into place, veneers have similar strength to natural teeth. They can usually last for many years, as long as you follow your dentist’s advice and take good care of them to prevent chips, cracks and stains.

Who can benefit from porcelain veneers?

We offer porcelain veneers in Sydney to correct a number of issues with teeth and help people to achieve beautiful natural smiles. This can include:

  • Covering up teeth stains or discolouration
  • Straightening a crooked smile
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Resizing or reshaping teeth

Veneers are a type of cosmetic dentistry. This means the treatment is designed to enhance natural smiles, rather than correct an oral health problem. However, they may also be used to correct minor orthodontic issues. If the issue you have with your teeth is too severe to be corrected with veneers, we may recommend another treatment.

To be a candidate for veneers, you need to have good oral health and not grind your teeth. We can let you know if you’re eligible when you book a consultation for Sydney CBD porcelain veneers at our clinic.

Types of dental veneers

There are two types of veneers – porcelain veneers and composite veneers. The type of dental veneer you choose will affect its appearance, cost and care requirements.

Porcelain veneers Sydney

Porcelain dental veneers are made outside the mouth from a block of porcelain in the shade you want for your smile. Once bonded to your teeth, these veneers will look and feel like the real thing and are as strong as natural teeth, but it’s still important to take care of your new smile.

If you want your new smile to look its best, porcelain veneers from Sydney Dental Surgeons use high quality porcelain that has a similar translucent appearance to natural enamel. We use CEREC CAD/CAM technology to manufacture porcelain veneers during a single visit.

Composite veneers Sydney

Unlike porcelain veneers, composite veneers are made inside the mouth by applying liquid composite resin. This is hardened in layers to shape your new tooth or teeth in one or more visits.

Once polished, composite veneers look similar to natural teeth, but they don’t have the same shine as porcelain. They’re also more easily stained and damaged, so you’ll need to be careful about what you eat and drink.

Pros and cons of porcelain veneers

Dental veneers aren’t the only option for improving your smile. We’ll make sure you have all the information you need to decide whether this treatment is right for you.

Pros and cons of porcelain veneers

  • Can treat a wide variety of aesthetic issues
  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • Can last for many years with good care
  • No invasive surgery

Disadvantages of veneers

  • Not everyone is a candidate for veneers
  • Can cost more than the alternatives
  • Teeth surfaces are permanently altered
  • Teeth may feel more sensitive afterwards

You can ask our dentists any questions you have about the procedure during your consultation for porcelain veneers in Sydney CBD.

Porcelain veneers procedure

Porcelain veneers at Sydney Dental Surgeons may be completed in one or more visits.

After your consultation to learn about the procedure from our dentists, we’ll schedule an oral health assessment. This lets us check that your teeth are a suitable size to support veneers and are free from problems such as tooth decay or gum disease that can affect the success of the treatment.

If you’re happy for the treatment to go ahead, we need to remove a small layer of enamel from the front of the teeth and to etch the surfaces. This helps the veneers to bond more easily and means they won’t protrude in your mouth. We’ll then take an impression of your smile that’s used to design your custom restorations.

Using CEREC technology, our dentists can design and manufacture your porcelain veneers in a single appointment. The other option is that your veneers will be manufactured at a dental laboratory and sent to our clinic in 1 to 2 weeks. Once your veneers are ready, we’ll check that they’re the right size and make any adjustments needed before bonding them to your teeth.

If you choose composite veneers rather than porcelain, these are built up on the teeth in a single appointment and hardened using ultraviolet light.

Porcelain veneers FAQ

“As a thin layer of the teeth needs to be removed before veneers can be placed, some people find that their teeth are more sensitive to hot and cold afterwards, but this usually goes away. If a veneer chips or cracks, it will need to be replaced.”

The cost of porcelain veneers at Sydney Dental Surgeons depends on their size and how many teeth are being treated. We’ll give you an idea of the porcelain veneers Sydney price during your consultation and discuss payment plans designed to make the treatment more affordable.
