What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is the field of dentistry concerned with enhancing the appearance of teeth, gums and other facial structures to help people achieve a beautiful smile.

While some cosmetic dental procedures are purely aesthetic – such as teeth whitening – others may also improve the function of your teeth and lower your oral health risks. Dental crowns may be fitted over teeth for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Orthodontics such as Invisalign® treatment can improve a smile’s appearance while also making it easier to eat and preventing jaw problems.

Although we’re not primarily a Sydney based cosmetic dental surgery, our dentists at Sydney Dental Surgeons have also completed training as cosmetic dentists. This means we can discuss treatments to address any issues you have with your dental appearance, while always prioritising your oral health.

Who can benefit from our Sydney cosmetic dentistry treatments?

If there’s something you want to change about the appearance of your smile, your cosmetic dentist in Sydney will discuss the treatment options that may be suitable for you.

Cosmetic or aesthetic dentistry can address teeth that are:

  • stained or discoloured
  • chipped or cracked
  • short, worn or misshapen
  • crooked or overlapping
  • gapped
  • missing

Your cosmetic dentist Sydney CBD will then create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your wants and needs. Before cosmetic dental procedures can begin, your mouth should first be free from gum disease and other oral health problems, as these can affect the success of the treatment.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening or teeth bleaching can usually lighten teeth that have been stained or discoloured by food and drink, smoking or natural ageing. The process uses a bleaching gel that removes stains from the dentine layer under the enamel. This could restore your natural tooth colour or lighten your teeth by a number of shades.

Our cosmetic dentists offer two types of teeth whitening:

  • In-surgery whitening performed at our clinic
  • At-home whitening using a customised kit

Teeth whitening can’t treat all types of discolouration, such as teeth that have been darkened by trauma or as a side-effect of medication. The bleaching agent also doesn’t work on dental crowns and other artificial restorations, which will need to be replaced if you want a matching smile.

Dental bonding

Dental bonding can be a convenient alternative to a crown or inlays and onlays for repairing minor chips or cracks in teeth. Bonding can also close small gaps between the teeth.

Our cosmetic dentists apply a tooth coloured composite resin to fill in or reshape the surfaces of teeth. This resin is then hardened using a UV light.

Dental veneers

Porcelain veneers or composite resin dental veneers can be fitted to the front of teeth to change how they look. This versatile treatment can correct a wide variety of aesthetic issues, from covering up all types of discolouration to straightening misaligned teeth and closing gaps.

Before the tooth coloured veneers can be fitted, your Sydney cosmetic dentist will first remove a thin layer of the enamel. Porcelain veneers are individually made and bonded into place, while composite resin is applied directly to the teeth in layers, then shaped to resemble a natural tooth.

Dental crowns, bridges and implants

Dental crowns or caps can be fitted over a tooth for many reasons by cosmetic dentist. They can be functional restorations to rebuild teeth that are damaged, weakened or worn down by tooth grinding. They may also be chosen for aesthetic reasons, such as changing the colour, size or shape of a tooth. Some of the tooth structure will have to be removed before a crown can be placed.

Dental bridges and dental implants are different cosmetic dentistry options for replacing missing teeth. Bridges are artificial teeth that are usually supported by crowns on the surrounding teeth. Implants are surgically placed in the jaw to replace a tooth’s root and may then be covered by a crown, bridge or denture.

Invisalign® clear aligners

Invisalign treatment can be an alternative to traditional metal braces for straightening misaligned teeth and other mild to moderate bite problems. The treatment uses removable aligners made of clear plastic, which are less obvious in the mouth than braces.

Your cosmetic dentist in Sydney will examine your mouth and let you know if you’re a candidate for Invisalign treatment. For more severe bite problems, traditional braces may be the only option.

Cosmetic dentistry Prices Sydney

The cost of cosmetic dental procedures depends on the treatment options you choose and other factors. We can give you a quote for cosmetic dentistry Sydney prices at your consultation, so you’ll have an idea of what treatments suit your price range.

It’s important to be aware that cosmetic dentistry treatments are not usually covered by health insurance, if the treatment is solely for aesthetic reasons. However, treatments that also have a functional benefit – such as crowns and bridges – may be covered.

Talk to our cosmetic dentists to find out what you can claim and ask about our flexible payment plans, designed to help make dental costs easier to manage.
